For students who drive to BYU

Your car could earn money while you're busy. And you skip the campus parking hunt.

Here's the planned pilot: you hand your keys to one named driver at the curb. While you're in class, they give paid Uber or Lyft rides in your car, then bring it back before you need it. A person drives. Self-driving is our long-term goal, not part of this pilot.

How the proposed pilot would work

Drop it off, it earns, it comes back.

Three steps, with a person at the wheel the whole time.

  1. 1 · Drop off

Hand over the keys at the curb

Meet the driver at a curb you agreed on near campus, hand over the keys, and go to class. No spot to hunt for.

  2. 2 · Paid rides

A named driver gives paid rides

One vetted driver, named to you in advance, gives Uber or Lyft rides in your car during the hours you agreed to.

  3. 3 · Back to you

Your car comes back, and you get paid

It's back at the same curb before your set time. You get paid for its time under the terms you agreed to, with the miles and hours written down.

This is the plan for the first pilot, which isn't running yet. Pay amounts and insurance arrangements aren't set. You'd see the terms in writing before you agree to anything.

Why I'm building this

I paid for parking twice and still couldn't count on a spot.

Class starts at a fixed time. Some mornings my options were a long walk from a far lot, or staying home.

That is the only evidence I have. I don't know how many other people live this morning. The list is how I find out.

  1. The permit

I bought a campus parking permit.

  2. The e-bike

Then I bought an e-bike, about $1,000. That is money spent twice on parking.

  3. The mornings

Some mornings I still skipped class, because of parking.
